Cold Calling and New Legislation: Opportunity or Threat?

Cold Calling and the New Legislation

Some people wonder whether cold calling is still relevant today. In this digital and mobile age, the “old way of conducting sales outreach” may seem a bit outdated, but nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the digital age—and the fact that we can see and measure everything online—means that cold calling can actually be used much more effectively than before.

GDPR

With the advent of the internet, people were able to look up information on their own, purchase products online, and send emails with questions, making cold calling seem less and less effective. The introduction of the “Do Not Call Registry” in 2009 seemed to deal a fatal blow to cold calling. Admittedly, the list of people who could be called may have shrunk, but the effectiveness of cold calling did not suffer in the least.

The law that takes effect on May 25, 2018, is a different story. The new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is intended to give customers more rights and reduce intrusive advertising. While this law does make it more difficult to “just reach out to anyone,” it can actually work to our advantage.

Cold Calling 2.0

All these rules ensure that not just anyone can be harassed by phone or email anymore. We think that’s a good thing, too. It also means that these days, when compiling a list of prospects, it must first be checked against the “Do Not Call” registry. Next, we have to verify whether the remaining prospects have themselves indicated in our database that they want to be included. That takes more time and makes the list a bit smaller. However, it also ensures that the people on the remaining list are actually open to being contacted. This means the conversation is likely to be easier, and the conversion rate for these calls will therefore increase. Because the digital world makes it possible to measure and monitor everything, we can also see what interests people, allowing us to tailor the conversation even more effectively.

The brake is actually the key to success

So, when asked whether cold calling is a thing of the past, we can confidently answer NO. By strategically leveraging the various “new” media, we ensure that all new regulations work in our favor. By sharing quality content online, we gain insight into our prospects’ interests. Then, all we need to do is have skilled lead specialists handle the conversation in the best possible way, and cold calling will be more successful than ever!
