Telemarketing: the preparation

There is no more powerful means for fast growth in specific target groups than the professional telemarketer. They steer on output, know their target group and know exactly how to help them. All of this begins with the right preparation. In this article we help you to prepare your telemarketing campaign perfectly, so that you achieve even better results.

Formulate an objective

Before you pick up the phone and go looking for leads, it’s important to prepare yourself well. Always start with the dot on the horizon. What do you want to achieve? Setting a goal ensures that you achieve results faster and better.

Always set your goal in a SMART way. A SMART objective is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound.

An example of a well-formulated SMART goal could be:
Today I want to have scheduled at least 5 appointments with potential clients by phone before 17:00.

A script is impersonal

Many telemarketers write a script and then read it out. We can’t say this often enough: scrap the script. A script is impersonal, and the message doesn’t come across convincingly. Do you find calling nerve-racking? Or do you not yet know quite what to say? Then a script can certainly help. Just always keep in the back of your mind that a script should only offer support. Ultimately, you get more results if you simply enter into dialogue with your target.

Look at the website

Are you working on a B2B campaign? Always first take a look at the website or the social media channels of the company you’re going to call. What does the company do? What problems might they run into? Perhaps there are already things you can see in advance that you can help them with. A quick scan is enough for this. The real problems often only come to light during the conversation!

Look for a contact person

Before you start calling, it’s good to know who you’ll need. Are you looking for the person in charge of marketing, purchasing or perhaps the owner? There is a lot of information about this to be found on the website or social media too. Larger companies often have a reception. To make sure you can be put straight through to the right person, it’s handy to know a name. This makes it a lot more personal and instils confidence. The receptionist will put you through faster.

Think of an icebreaker

Then comes the moment. You get the right person on the line and have their attention. To immediately create a bond and win your target’s trust, it’s good to throw in an icebreaker. Giving a compliment about a completed project you came across on the internet is enough. You can prepare this too, before you pick up the phone.
